Mike has been in the foster care system his whole life. If 2020 wasn’t difficult enough, Mike would have to face a new reality: life on his own. This difficult transition out of foster care carries its toll emotionally and financially. Transition age youth are faced with economic challenges and realities never before experienced.
The Supportive Housing Program (SHP) is helping 18-24 year olds transition from foster care and juvenile probation to stable housing and financial independence.
Over the past few months, Mike has taken advantage of every opportunity provided by the Supportive Housing Program. He listened to the advice of the Life Skills Counselors, created a budget, found a career-oriented job, and attained his own apartment. Mike learned practical skills and developed a real sense of personal confidence.
In January, Mike graduated from the program and Alvin Herring, the SHP Director, was present in court with him. Mike had made a memorable impact over the presiding Judge. The judge, clearly moved by Mike’s story, began to share his parting words. He shared his travel experiences to Japan where bowing is a common sign of respect. He expressed how this young man is doing all the right things and was honored to be part of his journey to success. The judge stood up, walked around the bench and bowed. Mike received the judge’s gavel as a parting gift. That powerful gesture created an unforgettable memory.
The Life Skills Counselors are helping empower young people to work hard, dream big, and strive for the best. With your support, you can help young people all over Chester County have every tool necessary to be successful!
